英語の過去形は、過去のある時点の出来事や状況を表現するために使用されます。また、過去形を作るためには、動詞の後に”d”や”ed”を付ける場合と動詞の形が変化する場合があります。

過去形の例文

He showed her his car.：彼は彼女に車を見せました。

She liked to read books before bed.：彼女は寝る前に本を読むのが好きでした。

They were happy during the vacation."：彼らは休暇中幸せでした。

She said she was busy.：彼女は忙しいと言いました。

補足説明

過去形が使われる場合に、①「過去の出来事や行動」を示す場合、②「過去の習慣」を示す場合、③「仮定や間接話法」を示す場合があります。上の例文の①と②は、動詞が規則的に変化し（dやedを付ける）、③と④は、動詞が不規則に変化しています。下の表は、不規則に変化する動詞の一覧になります。※仮定や間接話法については仮定法の章で説明します。
