Regarding the selective marital surname system, the Liberal Democratic Party's (LDP) working team held a meeting on the 6th and listened to opinions from a representative of Keidanren. Keidanren pointed out issues such as troubles arising when using a maiden name in business while having a different legal surname and the psychological resistance to changing one's surname. They expressed support for the 1996 Legislative Council proposal and called for the early implementation of the system. Some lawmakers voiced their agreement, while others suggested that expanding the use of maiden names as common names could address the issue. The working team plans to continue discussions with experts and other stakeholders.
Meanwhile, on the 7th, ahead of International Women's Day, Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan (CDP) leader Yoshihiko Noda gave a street speech, pledging to realize the system within the current parliamentary session. Kiyomi Tsujimoto, the party’s deputy leader, also attended and later explained to the press that the CDP intends to name the proposed bill the "Marital Same-Surname and Separate-Surname Selection Act" to emphasize that couples still have the option to choose the same surname.
